Excellent illustrations - not a technical manual Nov 11, 2009
By Julia A. Lichty

In order to cram that many mechanical bits into so few pages, the illustrations are frequently small, but intensely detailed. You'll find several of them on each page. This is great reference material for steampunk, sci-fi, and fantasy artwork, but since each device has only one illustration, it would be next to useless as a technical manual. There is a huge array of different devices - from tiny gears to giant steamworks - so as long as you're browsing for inspiration, this is a great book to have on hand.

Excellent Reference Dec 27, 2008

This book was originally published in 1899 and reprinted and enlarged in 16 editions between that date and 1921.
It has a line drawing and a short description of a wide variety of all sorts of the mechanical things, steam engines, valves, and other pieces of technology. This will be of tremendous value to anyone exploring some of the lost technology from 100 years ago.
The drawings are clear and the text very useful.
I really recommend picking this up by anyone interested in the history of steam technology.

Interesting movements Mar 13, 2009
By John Krysa This book does indeed contain a large number of mechanical movements, and some of them are just fascinating as you look at them and try to figure out how they work. A lot of them are just like 'So thats how they do that!' The biggest drawback, and I may be prejudiced as a mechanical tradesperson, is that some of the extremely interesting movements do not have enough detail. Other than this, a good way to lose yourself for a few hours at a time.

circa 1800 Jan 30, 2011
By diligent58 Pay close attention to the dimensions of the book ! This book consists of extremely tiny drawings, apparently copied from very old patent applications, accompanied by a very brief description of the use for the device. There is no description of how it works, but that is okay, because the drawings are too small to see the parts anyway.
A waste of money without having a magnifying glass, a powerful imagination, a great deal of spare time, and a burning desire to decipher 100 year old designs.
