This series of 17 self-instructional, skill-building assignments challenges students to master specific and selected AutoCAD commands, operations, and formats necessary to draw and plot typical 2-D residential and commercial architectural drawings. Students progress step-by-step through the assignments, applying previous lessons while they expand their skills with each new exercise. Assignments are designed to span one semester of work and are grouped into two sections: the Georgian House introduces the range of basic 2-D commands needed to "build" a simple furnished floor plan and exterior elevation, and the Furness Brownstone presents more complex plan views and exterior elevations. | | | |

Not what I expected. Oct 04, 2006
By Kelly M. Williams This book does not do a real great job at teaching AutoCAD. Almost every section tells you to ask your professor for specifics, and to use your classmates as a reference tool. That's great, but I bought this book to learn AutoCAD outside a classroom. I learned nearly everything that is taught within the first section of this book within the first two days of an actual AutoCAD class. In that respect, learning through this book is very drawn-out and slow-paced, and even in conjunction with an actual AutoCAD class, I fail to see how this book is of any help. Not to mention, the drawing directions are often very vague, and they assume that you know a bunch of architectural jargon. All in all, this book isn't really a collection of "assignments," or even a descriptive introduction into the world of AutoCAD. I'm not sure what it is, but one thing's certain: it's not very helpful.

Great teaching help for any CAD class Jul 03, 2008

I am teaching CAD basics using the exercises from this book. The assignments provide clear explanation and a lot of repetition to reinforce leaning of the basic CAD commands and procedures. A very clear and satisfactory week-to-week progress is guaranteed. My students love it, especially because at the end of the course, after only 40 hours of CAD, they are able to draw accurately and fast great looking floor plans furnished with their own blocks of furniture, as well as elaborate-looking elevations. I recommend this book to every CAD teacher.
