As weapons became more sophisticated, the field of ballistics naturally divided into three main areas of specialization: interior, exterior, and terminal ballistics. Providing unique coverage of all three areas, Ballistics: Theory and Design of Guns and Ammunition offers a seamless presentation of the complex phenomena that occur during the launch, flight, and impact of a projectile. Reader-friendly in style and format, the book explains the fundamental physics, terminology, theory, engineering aspects, and design techniques for each area in gradually increasing detail and complexity. Starting with interior ballistics, the authors examine the analytical and computational tools used to predict a weapon’s behavior in terms of pressure, stress and velocity, demonstrating their applications in ammunition and weapons design. The book continues with coverage of exterior ballistics, exploring the physics behind trajectories, including linear and nonlinear aeroballistics. The final section focuses on the effects of projectile impact, including details on shock physics, shaped charges, penetration, fragmentation, and wound ballistics. Enhanced with insights drawn from the authors’ extensive experience in government laboratories, industry, and academia, Ballistics provides an ideal vehicle for encouraging superior design and innovative applications in the field. | | | |

so many misprints Apr 04, 2008
By Luiz Victor Seize

The chapters about exterior ballistics have many misprints: not so many as in McCoy's book (which is frequently cited), but still enough to destroy the reader's confidence on the results presented. The chapters about terminal ballistics are somewhat vague about the applicability of the equations. Well, any useful results must necessarily be classified. Thermodynamicists the authors are not. All in all, the book is only an introductory work; but no more than that.

Comprehensive but exceedingly hard to deal with Oct 17, 2010

To preface - I hold an advanced degree in Math.
I bought this book mainly for External Ballistics - instead of McCoy's classic because of the negative reviews (errors) in the latter. I found the External Ballistics chapters almost impossible to read, with drawings looking like mockery of those in McCoy's book. And Dr. Carlucci's book has its own fair share of errors - 6 or so pages of errors.
Frustrated, I put this book on the shelf to be a reference in Internal and Terminal Ballistics if/when I need it, bit the bullet and bought the "real McCoy". What a relief! Robert McCoy's book reads really well (at least in my humble opinion)! Yes it has 20 PAGES of errata. Fine, I've printed those out and added to the book. Small price for usability.
Currently (as all I need now is external ballistics calculations) I use "the real McCoy".

Outstanding in-depth coverage of fundamental ballistics Mar 24, 2008
By Adam V. Floyd This textbook provides the most in-depth explanation of the fundamentals of ballistics that I've encountered. The book is designed as a college engineering textbook and reads as such. It starts with fundamental (thermodynamics, chemistry, dynamics, etc) and generates equations related to ballistics. I found the application of various areas of chemistry and physics to enlighten my understanding of ballistics. The book focuses primarily on the theory rather than the empirical side of the ballistics.

An excellent work indeed Feb 14, 2008
By Marco Morin An excellent work indeed. It is a must for anybody seriously interested in the theory and design of guns and ammunition and supplements enormously especially from a scientific point of view the admirable, but now aged, Small Arms Design by Townsend Whelen. Of course it is impossible to find in a single book everything that concern such a wide topic: Ballistics is, in my opinion, the best volume now present on the market. Some light-hearted remarks. Probably a general bibliography would have been an helpful complement for most readers. In the First Part (Interior Ballistics) it could have been interesting a paragraph on pressure waves in guns (see, for example, Interior Ballistics of Guns, Volume 66, Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics, H. Krier and M. Summerfield editors, New York, 1979).

Project Officer Dec 27, 2007
By Sylvester Bryant Written by a Leader in the field, Dr. Carlucci presents a modern treatment of an arcane subject. This book contains profound insights into the design and analysis of contemporary gun systems. A must read for the student as well as the professional.
