Coverage begins by introducing the basic setups and standards that anyone beginning a civil design CAD project should know, then moves on to the fundamental concepts common to most civil engineering projects such as grading, contours, and surveying. Readers will then explore the process of creating different types of drawings typically necessary for civil design and see how changing parts of a design can affect the entire project process. The book concludes with methods for estimating quantities for the different types of materials and work that will likely be encountered in an actual drafting assignment. | | | |

Cliff Notes version of book I was expecting... Aug 13, 2007
By M. Deans This book is such a basic and broad introduction to civil drafting that I double-checked that it was the one I had ordered. Unless you know NOTHING about civil engineering or AutoCAD, I suggest you skip this book and order something with a little more information. This book is so content-less that I'm shocked the publishers thought that they could get $45 for a $10 book.

Okay intro book but too expensive Feb 08, 2010
By swmagicien As the first reviewer wrote, this is something like a Cliff Notes version of the book you were hoping for. It's only 152 pages long, including the contents pages and index. There are a fair amount of illustrations so the actual text is reduced again by that much. The book's pages are only 6"x9" despite the impression from the picture that it is much larger. The included CD has a few CAD and other files to use as a basis for the exercises but other than that is basically empty.
FYI, you can see the table of contents at the Library of Congress website or at the publisher's website.
If this book were $10 or even $20 it might not be a bad deal, but the publisher's list price is ridiculous and I felt obliged to ding the review one star over the price issue.
Contentwise, I think it's okay if you looking for an AutoCAD oriented introduction to civil drafting. It is well organized and mostly written in straightforward, easy-to-understand English. I haven't yet done the CAD exercises but at a glance they look like they support the material adequately.
Unfortunately, if you want more than a basic introduction to the subject of civil drafting, you'll have to look elsewhere. And if you are looking for a book full of material that would be helpful in civil design and engineering this is not the book for you.
