Microstation Desperate for Learning Tools
This is a beginner's book and not a good one at that.
This book has not truly been updated since it was written for the SE version of Microstation. It contains nothing new since that time except for Accudraw and some on View Groups/Models. This is sad since there have been so many great advancements in the software. This book is more aptly aimed at Microstation PowerDraft - the "Lite" version of Microstation. To indicate it teaches even half of version 8i is simply false.
I have been using Microstation for many years. I bought this book to use in teaching my son the software. I bought it NOT because it is good, but because it was the slightly better of two evils (Harnessing Microstation being the other). Microstation is a great CAD program. But the software suffers greatly for the lack of decent learning tools. All of the Bentley software offerings suffer from this. Great software, but the only true method of learning it is to pay hundreds and thousands of dollars for one of their courses. Their courses are excellent but very, very expensive.
This book is passable for the beginners and concentrates on 2D CAD. The small section on 3D could not even be declared an introduction to the subject. Do not buy this book if you want to learn the 3D features of the software. There is little on material editor. Nothing on animation, fly-through, or the application of such techniques as elevation draping. Nothing on the editing of solids (simple Boolean operations). Nothing on Surface Modeling. Nothing on Section Generation.
Using this book you would not even be aware of Parametrics in Microstation. There is nothing on Dimension Driven Design. Nothing on Feature Modeling. Nothing on GenerativeComponents.

Inside Microstation V8i Jan 26, 2010
By rdgldr I found this book very uninformative for trying to learn Microstation. I have learned varies engineering software within AutoCAD through the purchase of books. So I am no dummy in trying to learn in this hands on manner with a book. Not worth the pages it's printed on. It's a shame cause I don't see any good books on learning Microstation and this author is employed by the software manufacturer and he's in charge of the their training institute, which I tried, that's why I started looking for books.

I wouldn't even bother Jun 30, 2010
By na-78 This book is junk and the tutorials are dated. The very first lesson says "launch Microstation V8 XM". HELLO, this is a book for V8i. The next step tells you to select the InsideMS 7ed user (which should have sync'd automatically when I installed the disc) but it does not exist. How about a little editing for quality control?

Not A Happy Camper Mar 18, 2011
By Thracian49 Our company has recently started working with Microstation V8i. There are significant differences between V8 & V8i. I had hoped to find information on some of the newer functionality but I was very dissapointed. One of the items I wanted to get a handle on was the "Print Organiser". He mentions the word under the section dealing with Print issues(page 438)but I could not find any reference to it in the Index. This a new function for V8i which is supposed to replace "Batch Print" and there isn't a word about it. I also wanted to get information on creating customized Toolbars and buttons. This is something which was quite easy in V8 but has changed dramatically in V8i. But again I could find nothing on how this works in V8i. This book is supposed to be for all levels and it might be ok for beginners. It does have useful practice drawings. But it's almost worthless to someone who has a little experience with the software. One of the problems with Microstation is that unlike Autocad there is almost nothing in print on how to make the most efficient use of the software. Save your money. Find someone who knows how and get them to show you then buy them lunch.
