The Comprehensive Introduction to Standard and Advanced Separation for Every Chemical Engineer

Separation Process Engineering, Second Edition helps readers thoroughly master both standard equilibrium staged separations and the latest new processes. The author explains key separation process with exceptional clarity, realistic examples, and end-of-chapter simulation exercises using Aspen Plus.

The book starts by reviewing core concepts, such as equilibrium and unit operations; then introduces a step-by-step process for solving separation problems. Next, it introduces each leading processes, including advanced processes such as membrane separation, adsorption, and chromatography. For each process, the author presents essential principles, techniques, and equations, as well as detailed examples.

Separation Process Engineering is the new, thoroughly updated edition of the author's previous book, Equilibrium Staged Separations. Enhancements include improved organization, extensive new coverage, and more than 75% new homework problems, all tested in the author's Purdue University classes.

Coverage includes

  • Detailed problems with real data, organized in a common format for easier understanding
  • Modular simulation exercises that support courses taught with simulators without creating confusion in courses that do not use them
  • Extensive new coverage of membrane separations, including gas permeation, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, pervaporation, and key applications
  • A detailed introduction to adsorption, chromatography and ion exchange: everything students need to understand advanced work in these areas
  • Discussions of standard equilibrium stage processes, including flash distillation, continuous column distillation, batch distillation, absorption, stripping, and extraction

2Full of Mistakes  Jan 29, 2007 By W. Herrick
I'm only 3 chapters into this book and the number of mistakes in it is appalling. The author consistently refers to the wrong equations, messes up derivations of essential equations (the operating line, for one), and is not very well written, either. It also is almost entirely about distillation.

I will not be looking forward to the rest of the semester with this book.

1Don't waste your money  Mar 10, 2007 By Zachary D. Smith
An abomination. Clarified nothing. Obfuscated everything. Poorly illustrated. Sent me running to the library for alternate sources.

5Taught me what my Professor didn't  Nov 25, 2011 By Karen E. Rothschild
This book is a must-have for anyone interested in Process Separations. While it does seem a bit distillation-heavy, the author does a very good job at deriving his formulas and explaining all the terms and concepts clearly. When I took this course in college, my professor was absolutely awful, and I was so glad to have this book to rely on. Now, as a senior in Chemical Engineering, I find myself reaching for this book whenever I have a question about Separations, and I always find my answer.

I haven't come across other Separations textbooks, so I can't compare this book to the market. However, I don't think you'll be disappointed if you're looking to learn the fundamentals, or brush up on your knowledge.

4Only as good as the time you put in  Feb 11, 2010 By Zack "Zack"
Well, I'm not done with the course, but the book so far is ok. It definitely is not the best book in the world when it comes to looking at the examples for hw help, but everything is there. Takes a lot of patiences to find it.

5Seperations for UD CME's  Feb 17, 2009 By Marie Costanian
This is not the greatest book when it comes to explainations. It is extremely broad!
